Last month, I attended my first design conference and it surpassed my expectations. I learned so much and had an amazing time around hundreds of creative minds! It's really a blessing to work for an institution that invests in your success. The UCDA conference took place in Baltimore, MD and it was my first time visiting the city. Although I didn't explore much since I stayed at the hotel where the conference was being held, I got a snippet of the city's culture and loved it.
During one of the sessions, we were told to partner up and discuss something we’re passionate about with strategies to pursue this passion in mind. This could be within our career or a personal project. I, of course, discussed Black in Brazil with my partner. It felt good telling a complete stranger about this and seeing his interest spark. Until… he volunteers me to stand up and share. I was horrified! But, by the time I wrapped my head around what was happening, everyone was already attentively staring at me. So, I shared. It wasn’t as terrifying as I imagined and it led to the speaker finding me later that day just to give me priceless advice! I was mostly appreciative of the fact that this experience helped me understand the value of sharing and collaborating. Even if it’s a collaborative conversation. We talked about my goals and objectives and threw ideas out there on what has and has not worked for her similar projects, giving me a new sense of direction.
Here’s me during this session looking all happy because I had no idea I was about to speak in front of everyone:
The Laws Take New York
One of my favorite cities with my favorite person ever! This was a great choice for a birthday trip and I'm happy my husband and best friend were with me. I’m not sure if I would’ve gotten through it without him. The first day was the absolute WORST day ever. Now, for those who know me best, I tend to complain about little things. But... this wasn't one of those instances. If it wasn't for my happy-go-lucky husband, I probably would've just given up on the trip after that day.
Long story short: we flew into Newark and embarked on a journey that last hours and STILL didn't get us to our destination, I lost my wallet (which was later on returned to me by God's grace), and I missed out on a full day of activities. The rest of the trip was filled with laughter, exploring, bonding, learning, and best of all: quality time. While we were still dating, we discovered our love languages and mine happened to be quality time. Getting a break from the every day routine and just enjoying each other was AMAZING! I'm grateful to be given the chance to fully live life and not just "get through it".
Here are some of my favorite pictures from our trip!
I took a while to finish up this post and I'm glad I did. Today seems like a very fitting day to post this because it's the day designated to give thanks. However, we all are so fortunate just be here alive and well, so everyday we wake up should be another opportunity to thank our Creator.
But, for the sake of Thanksgiving day, I'm thankful for my best friend and wonderful husband who I've watched grow and mature into the man who God designed just for me. I'm thankful for my mom and brother who drive me insane but I couldn't imagine my life without them in it. I'm thankful for my new extended family who love me as their own and treat me like the princess that I am ;) I'm thankful for friendships that keep me sane and accept my crazy. Last but most certainly not least, I'm thankful for my little tiny baby Bella who came into our lives unexpectedly and we could NOT be happier.
Relationships are essential to our well-being and I'm so thankful for the ones I've fostered.
